ABOUT MY PAINTINGS

Jason finds his motivation through the untamed landscapes he encounters in both Spain and South Wales, he shares his time between both places. The paintings are not of one place, but organically assembled from snippets and spontaneous painting in the studio and also plain air studies.

“Jason is interested in the idea that humans have an organic propensity to find wild spaces emotionally and spiritually compelling, perhaps as part of our evolutionary heritage.”

The paintings are always staged in the landscape and can include both figurative and still life forms. Tangents are important. He enjoys following their lead and what they uncover. This natural flow and exchange between paintings is an important part of his practice.

Jason’s research and practice of painting religious iconography has informed his contemporary paintings. It is possible to glimpse this in his treatment of landscape and figuration.

The medium of egg tempera has opened new experiences relating to the control of the painting process. With regards to colour, creating pigments from scratch grants a wonderful flexibility. We see thin washes, erasures reaching back to the surface and fluid line describing structure and objects. The chalk ground applied over a linen and paper surface, allows for absorbency and offers a suitable rigid surface for the application of egg tempera. The paintings are finished with layers of thinned damar varnish which must be applied over time after the painting is sufficiently dry.

Jason studied at Chelsea College of Art and Design, Herefordshire University (BA HONS), and Cardiff School of Art and Design (MFA) where he matriculated with a Distinction. Jason has spent various summers at the Cyprus College of Art and Design. He was shortlisted for the Jackson’s Painting Prize in 2022 and 2023.

More recently he has been learning Orthodox Christian iconography under the tutorage of renowned iconographer, Aidan Hart. You can follow his religious works by selecting the appropriate Instagram account in the left menu.
